HERO: FREDERICK DOUGLASS
Emancipation, Abolition, and Suffrage for All

As part of our unsung heroes of Black History Month series, this issue of The Winning Times features Frederick Douglass, a famous figure of American history who fought for the freedom of enslaved people and women’s rights throughout his life. He was born in February of 1817 or 1818 and was the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States. He escaped enslavement in Maryland to become one of America’s most prominent abolitionists, an advisor to Lincoln, and a Republican statesman.

In 1848, Douglass was the only Black person to attend the Seneca Falls Convention, the first women’s rights convention. Douglass stood and spoke eloquently in favor of women’s suffrage; he said that he could not accept the right to vote as a black man if women could also not claim that right.

By his death in 1895, Douglass had also been named United States Marshal for the District of Columbia, the first person of color in the position, had started his own newspaper, reached acclaim for his sermons and preachings, and published the final edition of his autobiography.

CHAMPION FOR MULTIPLE CAUSES

WOMAN NATION PRESENTS

SELF-CARE AND SELF-LOVE CHALLENGE
February 2023

You might have heard the terms “self-love” and “self-care” already, but what do they actually mean? These concepts go beyond “just” loving yourself—they encompass all the ways you treat yourself, think about yourself, and take care of yourself BEYOND a nice bath bomb.

As much as you may care for friends, family, and significant others, you are your number one 🥇You can’t pour from an empty cup, and this month, Woman Nation challenges us to focus on filling up our cups first so that we can show up as our whole selves in our personal and professional lives!

If you’d like to join the Woman Nation challenge, hop on over to the Woman Nation Facebook Page and join! The rules and stipulations (did we mention that you can win a prize for participating??) are listed once you are approved for the group!

RDI LEADERSHIP MVP AWARD
The winner is...James Walsh!

Folks, gather ’round, for it is time to announce the winner of this year’s Leadership MVP award. It was a tough competition, with numerous nominees who were all deserving in their own special ways, but after much deliberation and an intense game of rock-paper-scissors, we are proud to award the one, the only, JAMES WALSH!

Walsh always brings laughter (and sometimes tears) to our lives with humor and lighthearted teamwork. He has a unique talent for finding the fun in even the most mundane situations, and his ability to bring a smile to our faces is truly a gift.

So, let’s give it up for James Walsh, the king of comedy and the reigning champion of this year’s RDI Leadership MVP award. They say that laughter is the best medicine, and Walsh has been doling out the doses in spades. Congratulations!
